Officer Phillip L. Genier

Rochester: Saturday, January 4, 2025 at the age of 89. Pre-deceased by his wife, Blythe Bromley-Genier; brother Hon. Joseph T. Genier; son Tom Wallace. He is survived by his daughter, Beth McGrath; daughter-in-law, Elisa Wallace; grandchildren, Ryan and Luke McGrath, Blythe and Jesse Wallace; brother, Jack Genier; nieces, Nicole (Mike Criscuolo) Genier and Jayne Genier, nephews, John (Eldy Dale) Genier, Joseph (Karen Gorodetzky) Genier and Phillip (Marisa) Genier, numerous cousins.

Phillip was a graduate of Aquinas Institute where he played Football. He joined the US Army and served 18 months in Korea. Phillip the joined the Irondequoit Police Dept and served honorably for 23 years. In retirement, Phillip remained active in the security business.

His family will receive friends Thursday, January 9, 4-6pm at the funeral home (570 Kings Highway So.). Friends are invited to meet the family Friday, January 10, 10:00 am at St. Kateri at St. Margaret Mary Church for his Memorial Mass. Interment private Coye Cemetery. Chief Alexander N. Kirstein

He was a U.S. Marine, a Major and Commander of Operations for the Rochester Police Department and Chief of Police for the Town of Webster. All in all, he served 45 years in law enforcement and loved every day of it.
He was awarded the Medal of Valor for bravery and not a person who knew him would deny that “He always had your back!”

Our beloved father, Alexander N. Kirstein who inspired us throughout our lives to be who we are today passed on Saturday, January 18th, 2025 at the age of 94.

Alex is survived by his children, Kurt (Lin), James (Tracy), Kelly Powlen and Kathy Sheffer; grandchildren, Lindsey, Megan, Sherry, Jillian, Mark, Brian, Jenifer, James, Melissa and Jennifer; many great-grandchildren. He managed to convince the Good Lord to wait until exactly 5 years to the day that his bride, Diane went to Heaven so he could join her. The Man, the Myth, the Legend! You are loved and will be sorely missed!

Family and friends are welcome Thursday, January 23rd from 5-7pm at the Dreier-Giltner Funeral Home 1717 Portland Ave. Services and Interment at Webster Rural Cemetery will be held privately.

Officer Stan Williams

Stanley Jay Williams passed away on February 2nd, 2025, after a long journey with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 68 years old.
Stan was born in Monticello, New York, to Jerry and Delores Williams on July 26, 1956. Stan’s father was a staff Seargent in the United States Army which allowed him to travel extensively during his childhood. They were stationed in various places throughout the United States and abroad. He spent many years in Germany, his favorite place! While there, Stan was an avid participant in childhood sports at school and learned to speak German fluently. Upon returning to the United States, he graduated from Monticello High school and Orange County Community College, where he stood out in track and soccer. Following in his dad’s footsteps, He joined the United States Army in 1975 and became a sergeant in the 101 st Airborne Air Assault, stationed in Korea.
Stan returned to the states after his honorable discharge and pursued a career in law enforcement with the Village of Monticello Police Department. It was while on his foot patrol routine at a local radio station, that he met his devoted wife of 39 years Patricia (Patton) Williams. It was not long after their marriage that Stan was recruited by the Rochester Police Department as part of their new Lateral Transfer program, bringing six veteran officers to their department.
While on the department “Stan the man” as he was called, received numerous letters of recognition and was known for his excellent physical condition, neat appearance, (always had his shoes shined!!) and his mediation skills. Stan was a man of quiet strength. Stan had always been a great athlete and easily became a physical fitness trainer. He was a Detective Tactics Instructor and an Edge weapons Certified Instructor. He also worked narcotics investigations with the H.I.T. Team. Stan was passionate about powerlifting and as a member of the New York State Police Olympics Team, He won 2 nd place in the state competition and 4 th place in the National competition. In 2008 Stan decided to retire and give it “arrest”! Although retired, he continued to work part time for C.O.P.S. security and security for the Buffalo Bills. When Stan was not working, he was spending quality time at the gym with his son, riding his bike with his wife, running thru his neighborhood in his Under Armour gear, and especially enjoyed running 5k’s with his athletic daughters! He loved listening to Smooth Jazz, watching golf, soccer, tennis, football, and March Madness!
Stan leaves to cherish his memory his wife Patricia, daughters Deshaya Williams, Dr. Renata Fraser (Rayon) and Jade Adams (Brandon) His son Terance, His sister Michelle McNeal, three grandchildren: Rayden, Marley, and Hendrix and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins, great nieces, great nephews and friends.
We will miss Stan’s big heart, his great cooking skills, his cool calm peaceful demeanor, his guidance, his kind gentle soul, And his great smile! His memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part. God has him in his keeping we will have him in our hearts.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, February 8th from 10AM-12PM, with his Funeral service immediately following, at Dierna Funeral Home, 2309 Culver Road, Rochester, NY.

February 7, 2025. Survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Judith; sons, Sean and Rob; brother, Duane (Darlene); and several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Danny was an Army Vietnam Veteran and a retired Brighton Police Dept. Officer, but most of all, he was a loving husband.

Officer Antonio Rodwell

ROCHESTER – Passed away at age 56. He is predeceased by his father, William Rodwell; his brother, Michael Rodwell; and stepfather, Robert Smith; He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Rodwell; children, Tanner Rodwell, Tiana Rodwell, Jillian Sanchez, Jennifer Sanchez, Joshua Sanchez, and Megan Torrance; mother, Sheila Smith;12 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; siblings, Terry Anderson, William Rodwell, Kelvin (Sarah) Rodwell, Alexis Rambo, Portland Smith, Wesley Smith, Paula Smith, Christopher Smith; sister-in-law, Danielle Shulenburg.

Antonio was a dedicated family man. He attended school in Penfield and later went on to Monroe Community College. Antonio proudly served in the Rochester Police Department for 30 years before retiring in 2022. Outside of his career, he had a deep love for the water, spending many hours fishing, and enjoyed traveling on cruises. Antonio’s greatest passion was playing the drums, a hobby that brought him joy throughout his life. Above all, he adored his family, always putting them first. Antonio was called home by God on February 18, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and service.

Antonio’s funeral service will be held on Friday, February 28th at 11 AM at Bartolomeo and Perotto Funeral Home, 1411 Vintage Lane, 14626.

Sergeant Donald Powell

A devoted family man, military veteran, and beloved community member, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2025, at Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY, at the age of 84.

Born on August 6, 1940, in Niagara Falls, NY, Donald lived a life defined by his unwavering dedication to God, his country, his family, and his community. He was the cherished husband of Phyllis A. Clark Powell, whom he married on April 25, 1964. Together, they raised a family filled with love and pride, including their four children: Donald (Vicki) Powell Jr. of Rochester, Dan (fiancée Rosie Mateos) Powell of Brockport, Donna (Tim) Coughlin of Hamlin, and Dawn Chmura of Hamlin. Donald was also a proud grandfather of ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward. He is survived by his brother, Tom (Linda) Powell of South Carolina, sister in-law Janet (Chip) Perretta of Watertown, and brothers in law Garth (Nancy) Clark of Buffalo NY, and Allen Clark of Utah.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, Irving Powell and Emily Kuntz Powell, his beloved granddaughter Jordon Powell, his sister Margaret “Peggy” Rossiter, his brother in-law Doug Clark and sister in-law Elene Farmer.

A proud veteran, Donald served his country in the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1963. During his service, he earned the rifle sharpshooter badge and the Good Conduct Medal. After his military service, Donald dedicated over 25 years to the Rochester City Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Police Sergeant. Upon retiring, he continued his commitment to the community by driving a school bus for the Kendall Central School District for 30 years—a job he deeply cherished for the opportunity it gave him to interact with children and contribute to their safety and growth.

Donald’s love for his family extended to the many joys he found in his personal life. He was an avid gardener, taking pride in his meticulously maintained lawn and his beautiful garden. His collection of U.S. Marine Corps memorabilia was a reflection of his lasting pride in his military service. At home, he found companionship and comfort in his pets, Paco the dog and Finnegan the cat.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, April 13, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Sweden Town Lodge, 4671 Redman Road, Brockport, NY. Friends, family, and all whose lives were touched by Donald are invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Donald’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Donald’s legacy of love, service, and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community.

Captain Mark Bonsignore

Mark S. Bonsignore, devoted husband, father and grandfather died on March 1, 2025, in Hillsborough, NC.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 44 years, Beth (Fitts), daughter Dana (John) Butera, son Joshua (Amanda Gleichauf) Bonsignore; grandchildren Luca, Giancarlo and Viviana Butera and Marcello and Lorenzo Bonsignore; siblings Michael (Victoria Frisch) Bonsignore, Donna (Gary) Moynihan, Stephen Bonsignore, Kathi Higgins; in-laws Michael (Carole) Fitts, Gail (Mitch) Nass, Karen (PJ) DeGeorgio; many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless dear friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Marcus and Anne Bonsignore, in-laws Marvin and Vivian Fitts, brother-in-law Hugh Higgins and nephew Gabriel Bonsignore.

Mark was a highly decorated Police Captain in Irondequoit, New York where he served with dedication for 28 years and left behind a legacy of commitment to public service. Mark was a recipient of the State of New York Purple Heart and the Medal of Valor. He was a graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy, in Quantico, VA.

After retiring from the Irondequoit Police Department in 2007, Mark continued his dedication to public safety at BRITE. He was a vital part of their Public Safety solutions team for over 15 years. He retired from BRITE in 2023.

Mark and Beth loved to vacation with friends who became “family”. Mark was a Dive Master and shared many underwater adventures with his “Dive Buddies” in the Caribbean Islands. He was a long-time youth soccer coach, positively impacting the lives of many young athletes and a proud member of the Buffalo Bills Mafia.

Mark’s grandchildren were his greatest joy. He shared a special bond with each of them and they adored him for it. Mark’s kindness, infectious smile and desire to connect with everyone was his superpower. He valued his relationships with family, friends and colleagues. He will be deeply missed by all.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on March 21, 2025, at 9:30am at Sacred Heart Cathedral 296 Flower City Park, Rochester, NY 14615.

Captain Ed Knaak

Edward F. Knaak Jr. of Rochester, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, March 5, 2025. He was 73 years old.

Ed was born to Edward and Marjorie Knaak in Rochester, NY, and was one of four children. He married Lorry (Shutt) Knaak, his wife of almost 45 years on August 9, 1980 in Rochester where they raised three children. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and loved spending time with his extended family. He will forever be remembered as a loving, loyal husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend to so many whose lives he has touched.

Ed is survived by his wife Lorry, their three adoring adult children Crystal (Frank) Ronci, Eric (Jessica) Knaak, and Rebecca Knaak. He had two grandchildren Abigail and William Ronci. Ed was predeceased by his brothers Dan and David, and survived by his sisters-in-law Grace and Julie, and sister Marilyn (Dr. Michael) Owens.

Ed joined the Rochester Police Department in 1975 where he spent 28 years serving the City of Rochester. He worked in many roles including the forgery investigation unit, attending the FBI academy continuing on to earn a masters degree, finally retiring as a Captain commanding the Lake Section. He took great pride as a member of the police force and the city in which he served. After the police department Ed continued his service to the community on the board of BOCES representing East Irondequoit schools, leading health and safety for Greece Central School District, and providing security to Wegmans grocery stores and patrons.

Ed had a love of history, music, food, traveling, and deep-sea fishing trips with his lifelong friends.  Ed adored his grandchildren with whom he loved spending time and making them laugh.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Asbury First United Methodist Church,1050 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rochester Police Locust Club, Asbury First United Methodist Church, or Strong Memorial Hospital in Ed’s memory.

Resident Senior Agent Michael deStafano

Retired Rochester Senior Resident Agent Michael A. deStefano Jr. passed away last month at his home in Rochester, NY.

On February 17, two retired Secret Service Agents doing a welfare check on Mike discovered that he was deceased. His cause of death has been determined by the medical examiner to be natural causes.

After serving three years with the Office of the Special Prosecutor in New York, Mike served 31 years with the U.S. Secret Service, 1976-2007. 
 
He was posted in the New York Field Office, the retired Protection Detail of former President Nixon and the Rochester, NY Resident Agency as the Resident Agent In Charge.

He is survived by his younger sister and many close friends from his 34 years in law enforcement.

Officer John E. “Jack” Dubler

Newark—John “Jack” Dubler, 82, passed away at Newark Wayne Community Hospital on Tuesday, March 18, 2025.

Friends may call on Sunday, March 23, 2025, from 2-5 PM at Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 E. Miller St., Newark, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Monday March 24, 2025, at St. Michael Church, 401 S. Main Street, Newark, NY. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.

Jack was born on March 9, 1943, the son of the late Edward J. and Leona Nutten Dubler. He was a graduate of Newark High School, Class of 1963 and joined the U.S. Air Force in June of 1963 until 1966. Jack was a K-9 Officer with the Rochester Police Department and later held classes for the RPD and trained K-9’s. Along with other officers, he formed Together in Christ through RPD. He was a life member of the Newark Elks Lodge. For many years he volunteered at Newark Wayne Community Hospital. Jack was a member of the Newark School Board and was the Newarkfest President for many years. At St. Michael Church in Newark, Jack was an alter server for funerals and volunteered in the Parish office.

He is survived by his wife, Diana; a daughter, Julie Fletcher; a son, Jon (Kristie) Dubler; three grandchildren, Paige Fletcher, Conor (Kathea) Dubler, Jillian Dubler. He is predeceased by his sister, Beverly Jensen, and his K-9 partner, Branden.

Passed away surrounded by his family on May 14, 2025 at the age of 89.

Predeceased by his parents, Charles & Louise LaLoggia; sisters, Theresa (Joe) Reitano, Stella (Angelo) D’Angelo & Josephine (Sam) Prato.

He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Pearl LaLoggia; sons, Michael (Lisa) LaLoggia & Christopher (Brenda) LaLoggia; grandchildren, Justin, AJ & Madison; brother-in-law, Florian Komorowski; former sister-in-law, Barbara Komorowski; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He dedicated 21 years to serving with the Rochester Police Department, where his commitment to community safety and justice was unwavering.In addition to his law enforcement career, Joseph honorably served in the military as a Marine during the Korean War, followed by service in the Air Force. He was a proud member of the American Legion, Post 134, reflecting his continued dedication to his country and fellow veterans. Joseph LaLoggia’s life was marked by service and dedication. He will be remembered for his dedication to his family & contributions to his community & his country.

Family will receive friends Tuesday, May 27, 2025, 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm, at New Comer Cremations & Funerals, 2636 Ridgeway Avenue.

Officer John W. Iamele

Rochester – On May 21, 2025, John passed away suddenly at the age of 82. He is predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Frieda Iamele.

John is survived by his children: Kurt (Kim) Iamele, Kerri (David Cook) Iamele, and Kristie (Luke) Hasselstrom; and their mother, Kathleen (Al) Sorrese. He was a proud grandfather to Kaia Iamele and Preston Phan (children of Kurt and Kim); Isabella Iamele (daughter of Kerri and David); Devan, Danyell, and Darren Scott; and Lukas, Layden, Levin, and Lowen Hasselstrom (children of Kristie).

He is also survived by his loving partner of over 20 years, Carol Steward; her children, Amy (William Connell) Steward and Erin Pollay; and her grandchildren, Derek Ward and Brooklyn Pollay.

John leaves behind many beloved cousins, as well as several cherished pets.

Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Miller Funeral and Cremation Services, 3325 Winton Road South, with a Memorial Service to follow at 2:15 PM. Ms. Judith Trost

Judith L. Trost, Greece, NY on June 20, 2025, age 84.

Survived by family members Susan (Robert) Bonnet, Samantha Bonnet, Peter (Elizabeth) Matthews, Isabel (Nathan) Leonard, and Nancy Heberger; dear friend Mary Vascukynas.

Predeceased by her parents Harold and Edna (Bansbach) Trost, sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Kenneth Heberger, and nephew James (Deanna) Heberger.

Judy was a graduate of Irondequoit High School class of 1959 and Rochester Business Institute and (proudly) retired from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. She was a member of SOAR and ARPALER. She loved her knitting groups, reading and helping others. She donated hundred of blankets to the Veterans Associations and other charities over the years and baby bonnets for local hospitals.

Judy lived at the Episcopal Church Home and they became like family to her. She was the unofficial mail carrier and enjoyed seeing everyone every day on her route. Her family would like to thank them for taking such good care of her.

Calling hours will be held 12:00-2:00pm Wednesday June 25 at Farrell-Ryan Funeral & Cremation Services 777 Long Pond Road with a service to follow at 2:00pm. Interment will be private for the family.

Predeceased by his parents, Leo and Katherine Trau; sister, Mary Lou Trau.  Survived by his beloved domestic partner of 25 years, Debra Meath Dwyer; his son, Mark (Melissa) Trau; daughter, Karin (Steve) Ward; son, Stephen (Tara) Dwyer; grandchildren, Mathew Trau (Kristyn Sengillo), Jamie Trau (Brandon Young), Sydney (Colin) Whiting, Lyndsay Brown (Raffaele Saieva), Audrey Brown; great-grandson, Blake Trau; many loving family and friends. 

David retired at rank of Detective Supervisor for the Town of Greece Police Department after 20 years, 1965-1985.  He was a Volunteer Captain for Greece Ridge Fire Department, member of Greece Police Gold Badge Club, member of ARPALER, Association of Rochester Police and Area Law Enforcement Retirees.  He enjoyed horse racing, car racing, fishing and boating.

Lieutenant Gorden Vigilante

Gordon Anthony Vigilante, aged 83, passed away on June 29, 2025, in his Meridian, Idaho home with a view of his gardens. He was born on May 13, 1942, in Boomer, West Virginia, to Tony & Josephine Vigilante and is survived by his wife of 56 years, Janet, his children, Lisa and Michael, and three grandchildren. Also, his brother, ARPALER member and retired RPD Officer Richard Vigilante.

Gordie retired from the Rochester Police Department as Lieutenant after 20 years of service, followed by ten years with the US Postal Service. He also served in the Army Reserve.

A man who worked hard while maintaining many interests, Gordie lived an active life fishing, hunting, at the gym, golfing and gardening. In his last years he was fully devoted to caring for his wife.

Our family respects the wishes of Gordon and will not be holding services. If called to honor his death with new life, plant a tree or flowers, as he was a lover of creating gardens.

Officer James DiPasquale

James “Jim” T. DiPasquale, 72, of Rochester, N.Y., passed away July 30, 2025, at Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center. He was born on October 16, 1952, in Rochester, N.Y., the son of the late Alexander and Harriett DiPasquale. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Alexander and Nicholas DiPasquale. Jim is survived by his children, Benjamin DiPasquale and Danielle DiPasquale; his sister, Mary Ellen Colling and his brother-in-law, Craig, his grandson, Casen Vito, his close friends, Ila “Mae” Baliu, David Albert and Richard DeJoy; and many other relatives and friends who will forever carry his memory.

Jim proudly served the City of Rochester as a police officer for 29 years, dedicating his career to helping others. Above all else, Jim was a devoted father who would travel the ends of the earth for his children. Everything he did was for his kids, every sacrifice, every sleepless night, every decision made with their future in mind. Jim faced many hardships throughout his life, especially in his later years, yet he never lost his humor, generosity, or instinct to care for others. His loyalty, morals, and love for his family defined him. To those who knew him, Jim was more than a father, brother, or friend, he was a rock, a source of laughter, and a reminder of what it meant to put others first. At Jim’s request, no formal service will be held.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center for compassion and care shown during his final days. Officer Jeffrey Smith

Jeffrey D. Smith, age 55, of Henrietta, NY passed away Friday, August 8, at home with his family, after a valiant fight against melanoma.

Jeff was born in Elmira, NY, in 1969, to Glenn and Barbara Young Smith of Horseheads. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Tanya Thomas Smith of Henrietta, and his cherished daughters Kyra and Chloe. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Carolyn Thomas of Scottsville. Jeff was predeceased by his sister, Kimberly, and is survived by her children, Paige, Chase, and Morgan Doner and their father, Joe Doner, all of Horseheads. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, and many good friends.

Jeff was a skilled man who could build or fix anything. Whether it be a house from the ground up or a homemade piece of fine furniture, his talent was undeniable. He was often called upon by friends and neighbors to help with various household disasters. Jeff was humble, kind, loving, and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was frequently caught on video by his kids dancing or cracking a joke in a loud humorous voice. Jeff spent summers growing up at Seneca Lake and later spent many special moments at Canandaigua Lake with Tanya and the girls. He loved to go boating, fishing, and enjoyed all water activities. Jeff also enjoyed watching Red Sox games with his family every season at Fenway Park and from the comfort of his home. Most important to him was his wife and girls. Everything he did was with them in mind and he supported them in every way. He attended many sporting events, school functions, and was always there to offer advice.

His absence will be felt by many. You will forever be in our hearts “Smitty.”

Chief Russell Ruhl

Russell R. Ruhl, 80, passed away on August 13, 2025, at 11:47 a.m. at Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY, surrounded by friends and family. He served as Chief of Police for the Town of Ogden, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and National Guard, and proudly served in the Gulf War.

He is survived by his wife, Joan A. Ruhl; his brother, Rodger Ruhl, and sister-in-law, Susan Hart Ruhl; his son, Rob Ruhl; and grandsons, Jack and Will Ruhl.

Officer Charles Cortese

Chuck passed away in Florida in the first week of September at the age of 76.

He joined the Rochester Police Department in 1970 and retired in 1990. During that time, he held many positions in his career and retired from the Traffic Enforcement Unit.

He was a member of ARPALER. We have no further details.

Officer William Hargather

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Bill Hargather, who left this world after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease. Bill passed peacefully on September 3, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Mildred (Mickey) Hargather; his sisters, Judy (Joe) Gerew, and Patricia (Richard) Pratt; his brother-in-law, James (Laura) Cotturone; and his sisters-in-law, Emily (Rosario) Tripoli, and Donna (Gerald) Genier. Bill is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Pattie Hargather; his loving children, Patrick (Angela) Hargather, and Amy (Jim) Centola; grandchildren, Karlee Hargather, James Hargather, Alex Centola, and Andrew Centola; and many dear nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins, and friends.

Bill was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather whose greatest joy came from spending time with his family.

For more than 20 years, Bill served as a dedicated police officer with the City of Rochester, protecting and supporting his community with honor and integrity. Beyond his career, he cherished every moment with his grandchildren, creating memories full of laughter, love, and stories that will be treasured forever.

He loved both playing and watching all sports. He especially enjoyed rooting for his favorite player, Mickey Mantle. His passion for sports was something he eagerly shared with family and friends.

He will be remembered for his strength, humor, and the deep love he held for those closest to him. His legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of his wife, children, grandchildren, and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Officer Lucien Bardeen

Lucien “Jerry” Bardeen (aka Papa and Big Ugly) passed away peacefully on Thursday, 9/11/2025, in Rochester NY, surrounded by his loving family. Born on March 22, 1942, he led a remarkable life filled with dedication and service to his country, his community and his family.

He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army Reserve during his distinguished military career. He received numerous awards and decorations, including the Bronze Star, for his exceptional contributions to our nation’s defense.  Jerry was a dedicated patriot who served in Desert Shield/Desert Storm, displaying unwavering courage and commitment. He was deeply respected by his fellow service members and will be remembered for his unwavering dedication.  

Jerry was also a retired City of Rochester Police Officer of 20 years where he served the members as Vice-President of the Locust Club.  He was a retired youth officer where he dealt with at-risk juveniles in the City of Rochester. Upon retirement, he was employed by Visiting Nurse Service as security personnel. 

He was a member of the Hamlin Fire Department, American Legion Post 120, Locust Club, Association of Rochester Police & Area Law Enforcement Retirees (ARPALER), soccer coach, Hamlin recreation director, foster parent, animal lover and music enthusiast.

Lastly, he was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.  His presence will be sadly missed from the wonderful family events and gatherings, but more importantly from everyday life.

Jerry was predeceased by his mother, Margaret Bardeen. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol (Zegarski), of 58 “glorious” years; their children, Kevin (Patty) Bardeen, Tina (Michael) Burrage, Melissa Melendez (Danny Mammarello), Marc (Patti) Bardeen and Michael (Terry) Crissman; his grandchildren, Katherine Dickerson (Phillip Luke) , Christopher (Justine) Dickerson , Brandon Dickerson (Amber Johnson), Michael (Alexandra) Burrage, Zachery (Jenna) Bardeen, Nathan Bardeen (Erin Giblin), Mercedes Melendez (Frankie Essom), Jennifer Melendez, Hannah Bardeen (Bradley Beckwith) and Hailey Bardeen; their great-grandchildren, Theo Dickerson, Violet Bardeen, Aston Essom, Barrett Burrage and Lylah Dickerson – who will forever cherish his memory.  Extended family include David Borland, Arturo  Melendez (Eileen Tipton) and Jimmie (Nancy) Larson.

Sergeant John “Pops” Flannery

John Richard Flannery, affectionately known as “Pops” and formerly of Rochester, NY, passed away on September 14, 2025, in Haw River, NC after battling dementia and the unexpected passing of “My Barbara”.

John was born on August 20,1937 in Rochester, the eldest of three. He graduated from The Aquinas Institute in 1955 and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1962. John married Barbara Davis on July 30,1966. He then dedicated 25 years to public service as Sergeant Flannery, a deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. John was a SWAT Unit Commander, organizer of police and security detail for several PGA and LPGA tournaments and baseball player with the “County Mounties”, the MCSO team. He was instrumental in the creation of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association and upon retirement, served as both President of the Sheriff’s Office Association of Retirees (SOAR) and Office Manager for the Monroe County Deputy Sheriff’s Association (MCDSA). John was widely regarded as a dedicated, honorable and kind man and all who knew him spoke very highly of him. He was a devoted husband, dad, son, brother, officer and especially, Grandad. He liked to cook family dinners, often on the weekend after enjoying his favorite pastime, a round of golf.

John was predeceased by his parents, John P. and Ethel (Prevost) Flannery and his wife of 59 years, Barbara Ann Davis, her passing just 19 days before his. He is survived by his 3 daughters-Patricia (Jeff) Moon of Haw River, NC, Kathleen (Anthony) Marcella of Rochester, NY and Jennifer (Alex) Barrera of Miami, FL; 12 grandchildren-Ryan (Veronica) Moon, Joey (Caileigh) Moon, Tyler Moon, Sophia (Alex) Coull, Alicia Marcella, Anthony John “AJ” Marcella, Benjamin Marcella, Vanessa Royston, Avery (Derrick) Whitcomb, Alex Royston, Madison Barrera, Claudia Barrera; 1 great granddaughter Mia Moon; 2 sisters-Mary (Al) LaRocque and Noreen (Louis) Zefferi both of Rochester; 4 sisters in law, many beloved nieces, nephews and dear friends, including his lifelong, grade school friend Bud Kelly and Buddy, his furry friend.

There will be a celebration of life for both John and Barbara in the Spring, 2026.

Officer Wayne Hadley

Wayne passed away peacefully at home, on October 14, 2025, after a courageous battle with Liver Cancer, at the age of 78.

Born in Penn Yan, NY on July 9, 1947. He was the first born of two brothers and three sisters.

Wayne grew up in Williamson, NY, where he graduated from Williamson High School. He joined the Army in 1967, where he received an Honorable Discharge in 1969. He then took over his wife’s family farm “Lake Aire Orchards” in 1973, when his father-in-law passed away. He joined the Rochester Police Department in 1969 and worked both jobs until he was able to retire from the police force after 20 years. He was then able to sell the farm in 1989 and moved the family to Wilmington, NC, where his daughter was attending UNC-W.

He was pre-deceased by his parents, Alfred and Myrtle Hadley, his wife, Joyce A Hadley, his son, Michael W Hadley, his brother, Harold Hadley and his sisters, Elaine H Grimes and Shirley H Corah. 

He is survived by his daughter, Stacy Hadley-Porter, his granddaughter, Katelyn Hadley, his brother and sister-in-law, Reed and Betsy Hadley, his sister and brother-in-law, Judy and Claire Tusch and his sisters-in-law, Gale Meister and Diane Hadley and many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Hospice, the ASPCA and the Tunnel to Tower Foundation.

A celebration of life and burial at Pultneyville NY Cemetery will be scheduled in the spring of 2026. The future date will be posted on Wayne’s Facebook page for his family and friends when it’s determined.

Deputy Arnold DeVries

Arnold George DeVries, 93, of Rochester, NY, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025. Born in Rochester on October 1, 1932, Arnold proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and later retired as a Deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary DeVries. He is survived by his sons James and Michael (Jennifer) DeVries; grandchildren Nicole DeVries and Rachael (Michael) Vendetta; and great-grandsons Jayden and Lucas Vendetta.
