Detective Elwood “Red” Smith passed on January 13th 2009 at the age of 82 years. Red was a 30 year veteran of the Rochester Police Department and served in the Patrol Section, K-9 Unit, Special Criminal Investigation Unit, and the Homicide Squad. Red is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret, his daughter Marie, and sister in law Ursla Favata.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in W.W. II. during which time he fought in three major battles, receiving the Purple Heart for his injuries. After his discharge from the Navy, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps for four years, and after his discharge from the Army, he became a police officer in 1955, retiring as a Grade B Detective in 1985. He is a member of the Rochester Police Locust Club, Rochester PBA, and long time member of the ARPALER.
His Funeral service was held at Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral home 1411 Vintage Lane (near Long Pond Road in Greece) on Thursday January 15th. His Funeral Mass was held at St. John the Evangelist Church on Friday January 16th. Interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Anthony J. Volonino passed on Thursday, January 15, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Parnofiello Volonino; children, Louis (Kelly), Alice of CA, Daniel & Michael; grandchildren, Daniel Jr., Nicholas, Andrew, Marissa & Kyle; sisters, Mary Volonino, Genevieve (Robert) Doran; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Tony was a graduate of R.B.I. He was a WWII Air Force Veteran and a member of American Legion Post 1182. He served 3 years with the Rochester Police Department and 31 years with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Dept. He retired in 1985 with the rank of captain and had the responsibility of the department’s records section. He was a past president of the Sheriff’s Retirement Assoc. and was a member of the Association of Rochester Police Area Law Enforcement Retirees. He also had chaired the Sheriff’s Department United Way Drive for 20 years. He served for 10 years with the Catholic Youth Organization and was a member of the Men’s Club of St. Helen’s Church. He was a member of the Gates Republican Club and Town & County Committee. He was an active member (since 1982) of the Gates Lions Club, where he was past President, past Vice President, past Secretary, and was currently in charge of Public Relations. Tony was awarded the Dandy Lion Award in 1989 and 1996, and the Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2000.
His service was on Sunday January 18th, 2009 at DiPonzio Funeral Home, Inc., 219 Spencerport Rd., Gates. His Funeral Mass was held on Monday, January 19th at 10:00 AM in St. Helen’s Church, 310 Hinchey Rd. Interment, Grove Place Cemetery.

Joel retired from the City of Rochester Police Department and from the East Rochester Police Department, where he served as its Police Chief. Joel was an investigator for the Monroe County Welfare Department. He served as director of Safety & Security for 22 years at Park Ridge Hospital and he was Director of Security for Monroe County.

Pittsford: March 12, 2009, at age 84, after a long battle with emphysema. Predeceased by his brother, Eugene S. Wetmore. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Laura; sons, William and Richard; loving grandfather of Tyler and Riley Wetmore; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Philip and Donna Coene; a niece and nephew. Bob served in the 6th US Marine Division of the Pacific Theater during WWII, 1943-1946, and was wounded in Okinawa. He served 2 ½ years with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and 22 ½ years with the Brighton Police Department and The ARPELER. Bob served as an off ice official for the Rochester Americans Hockey Team for over 42 years. His warmth and love for people will be sorely missed by friends and family.

West Irondequoit: May 17, 2009 after a courageous battle with an extended illness. Predeceased by his wife Esther. A WWII Veteran, Vic joined the RPD in 1941 and after serving a short time with the RPD, he entered the Army Air Corps. He served in France, “Normandy” Germany and England. When he returned home in 1945, he regained his position with the RPD and was known as “Big Vic of Charlie 12” Vic retired after 38 years of service to our community. He was one of the few remaining members of the 60 club. Actually, Vic never worked a day in his life because he spent his whole career working night.

Major William Mayer passed on July 30, 2009 at the age of 65. He was born in Rochester on June 26, 1944, to Franklin and Ruth Doser and had lived in this area for many years. Mr. Mayer was a U.S. Air Force Veteran of Vietnam, a member of St. Mary’s R.C. Church, a member of the Kendall Lions Club and the Brockport VFW. Bill was a graduate of Monroe Community College, FBI National Academy, and retired as a Major from the Rochester Police Department in 1989. He is also a former Chief of Police for the Village of Holley. Bill is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol, daughters: Bar (Ed) Snyder of Albion, Debra Mayer of Batavia, Son: Richard (Donna) Mayer of WA.; grandsons. Major John McGurn passed away Nov.12, 2009, in Largo, Florida at the age of 75. “Sandy” as he was known to many was a native of Rochester, NY, where he retired as after 30 years of service at the rank of Major of the Operations Division with the Rochester Police Department. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and proud of his Irish heritage. Sandy is survived by his companion of 22 years, Barbara Love; children Sean McGurn, Timothy McGurn, Patrick McGurn and Kathleen (Clint) Schrider, all of Rochester; grandchildren, Jesse, Jacob, Sarah, Arianna, Dalton, Lauren, Olivia and John; sisters, Lee (Jim) Chamberlin, Terry (Leonard) Whitcraft and Lorraine Weekes and special friends Pam and Les Lambert, of Atlanta.
Major McGurn was a member of the Rochester Police Locust Club, the Police Benevolent Association and The ARPALER.

RPD Lieutenant Louis Genovese passed on December 11, 2009 at the age of 80 years. He was predeceased by his wife Josephine; his parents Samuel and Rosalie; his brother Santo and his son-in-law Robert McCartney. He is survived by his children; Louis Genovese (Kim Pfromm), Carol McCartney, and Samuel (Andrea) Genovese; grandchildren, Robert, Joseph, Samuel and Anthony, brothers Robert (Ann) and Gerard Genovese of Las Vegas. Sister, Josephine Zalcyki; many nieces & nephews. Lou served with the Military Police in Japan in 1946 guarding Segamo Prison and proudly served with the Rochester Police Department for 35 years.
He is also remembered by his friend and companion of 23 years, Jeanette Lobene.
