Sergeant Robert Cunningham

MACEDON: Cunningham, Robert F., 64, of Macedon, NY, passed away on January 7th, after a 10 year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was born in Elmira, NY, and raised in his beloved hometown of Millport, NY, on the shores of Catherine Creek. Growing up, April 1st was as important as any holiday, and Lamoka Lake was his second home in the summertime. Whether he had his line in the water, or was sitting in a tree stand, Bob loved growing up in Millport.

According to Bob, those who grew up in Millport usually end up on one side of the law or the other, so in 1972, he joined the Rochester Police Department. He served 33 years as a Police Officer and Sergeant, often bragging that he “never lost a foot chase.” In his time with the police Department, he earned numerous awards, letters of recognition, and more importantly friendships that could only be described as brotherhoods. In 1976, he was married to Susan LeRoy. Shortly thereafter, they began their family, which is when he found his true calling, as a husband and father.

Always strong and supportive, Bob was the role model that a child needs to grow into a responsible, respectable adult and loving parent. He was active in his church, always putting the needs of others first.

In 2004, a year before retiring from RPD, he gained a new title: Grandpa, “the best job in the world” according to Bob. His son, Bobby Cunningham, and his wife, Brenda gave him 4 granddaughters: Natalie (11), Summer (9), Amelia (6) and Elise (3). Jim Cunningham and wife Christina: Collin (10), Nina (8), and Maggie (2). Last year, Bob’s only daughter, Kelli, wed Ryan Beebe: Tyler (11). Bob is also survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Susan and Sister: Lynne Cunningham. Bob was predeceased by his mother, Helen Cunningham, cousin Michael Stoddard, and Aunts and Uncles.

Calling hours will be held from 4-8pm on Tuesday, January 12 at the Robert L. Yost Funeral Home, Inc., 123 W. Main St., Palmyra. A memorial service will be at 11am on Wed., January 13 at the First Baptist Church in Macedon. In Lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to Lifetime Care-Hospice, 800 W. Miller St., Newark, NY 14513 or to Alzheimers Association, 435 East Henrietta Road, Rochester NY 14620
